I love Copenhagen. There, I said it. It’s a city with such a happy, shiny personality that it’s difficult NOT to fall in love with it on first impressions alone.
I won’t reel off all of the things I found great about it, but let me just say it was one of the friendliest, safest, cleanest, and most aesthetically pleasing places I’ve ever been. I’ll admit now that I didn’t know much about it before I landed, which is unusual, because usually I like to read up about a place; learn its histories, its folklores, understand its art scene, and read stories set there.
Luckily for you guys (or those of you who haven’t been to Copenhagen yet but are seriously considering going), I’ve put together this little guide to Copenhagen. It’s not your usual guide of things to see and do, though. Oh no. This guide brings together short stories about the city, essays about the art scene, and other in-depth aspects to give you a well-round sample of what to expect (and hopefully get you excited!).
Without further ado…

1. Vintage Bicycles in Copenhagen
Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. In fact, you’ll probably see more bikes on the roads than cars. It’s the go-to method of transport for many of the locals for a number of reasons – the city’s fairly small, so bikes are perfect for hopping from one place to the next, and you can indulge in a beer or two before pedalling back home.
This article delves into Copenhagen’s bicycle past and showcases some beautiful images of vintage bikes between 1910 and 1950.
2. Copenhagen – The Happy Capital
Copenhagen is also one of the happiest cities in the world. In recent surveys it’s come out on top or near the top every single time. What makes it such a happy, sing-song place? Well, read this article and find out!

3. A Design Lover’s Guide to Copenhagen
I’m a huge design lover. Not many of you know that I studied Graphic Design and, because of this, I’m always on the hunt for great aesthetic pieces when I travel, whether it’s an eye-catching piece of architecture (Copenhagen has lots of these!), or a quirky cafe sporting a niche design style.
4. Eating Frugally in Copenhagen
If, like me, you’re a traveller who likes to keep a tight hold on their purse strings, you’ll probably already know that Copenhagen isn’t the cheapest place in the world. (If you’re looking for how much it costs to travel there, check out this article). With the best restaurant in the world located there (NOMA, if you didn’t know), it’s safe to say the foodie scene can seem a little extortionate.
Luckily (for you and your wallet), there are ways you can enjoy the local cuisine without breaking the bank.

Okay, so you’ve booked your cheap tickets (seriously, why do they tease us with cheap flights there?!) and now you’re panicking because you don’t know much about the place. Just check out this straight-forward list of things you should and shouldn’t do in Denmark’s capital to keep you on the straight and narrow.
Aha, I see you now, finger desperately clicking away on the link above so you can revel in some awesome internet cat pictures. This article is actually about a picture-book by James Joyce called “The Cats of Copenhagen.” It’s really cute with twee illustrations and one major message – there are barely any cats in Copenhagen.

7. On the Danish Contemporary Art Scene
By now you know I’m a huge art lover, but simply visiting galleries and museums when I travel isn’t enough. I like to dig beneath the arty surface of places to see what makes them tick. I believe art can give us a great insight into the current state of affairs, including societal issues, economic problems, and the deal with pop culture.
8. Short Stories From the Danish Capital
Literature lovers rejoice! Short stories are huge in Copenhagen (it just seems like that fairytale kind of place, right?!), and I found an article about a Copenhagener talking about the importance of short stories within the culture, as well as some options for you to check out.

9. Copenhagen’s Evolving Tivoli Gardens
I was gutted to find Tivoli Gardens shut when I visited Copenhagen. It was probably because it was the dead of winter and disgustingly cold, but still, it was something I was looking forward to (it just means I get to go back now, though, right?!). This article on Travel + Leisure highlights the ways in which the Tivoli Gardens are a contemporary design destination within the city.
10. 100 Things to do in Copenhagen
I know, I know, I said this guide to Copenhagen wouldn’t have any “list” types posts, but I just had to share this one with you. Put together by a writer, jazz pianist, and entrepreneur, the idea behind the (seriously pretty) site is to collect 100 experiences in Copenhagen and lay them all out bear for would-be visitors to see.

11. Is Tourism Saving Christiania?
Christiania is a self-regulated autonomous region in the heart of Copenhagen that has thrived for many years on its own rules and ways of life. Over the years it’s faced a shed-load of problems that are beginning to peck away at its pretty facade. This post highlights how tourism might in fact be saving it, rather than hindering it.
If you were on the fence about visiting Copenhagen, hopefully this article has tipped you over the edge! It’s a wonderful city and I have no doubt that you will absolutely love it.
Have you been to Copenhagen? What did you enjoy most about it?
